Abstract:Certain projects in 3ds may require the use of multiple textures, ies files and other external files. Because 3ds links to these external files, problems may arise while moving the project to different computers. This tutorial steps through how to set up a project folder to avoid these problems. It also covers how to repair paths, should one of these links become broken.
Setting up a project folder in 3ds Max Design
1. Open 3ds Max Design.
2. Go to M > Manage > Set Project folder.
3. If you do not have an existing project folder, browse to where you want your project folder to be located.
4. Select "Make New Folder"
5. Name your project folder
This will create the file structure from the screen shots above.
6. Go to M> Save and save the file in the scenes folder within your project folder. This should be the default.
7. Under the customize menu, select Preferences.
8. Go to the files tab and check the box "Convert local file paths to Relative"
9. Select "OK"
Now, you can store files within your project file structure and move your entire project folder to a new computer without loosing your links.
It is extremely important to remember to repeat steps 7-9 when you first open up 3ds on a new computer. Otherwise, you will have to repair the paths to your files.

1. Should your paths become lost or damaged, go to M > Manage > Asset Tracking (shortcut: Shift + T)
2. Make sure the missing file is selected and then to go to File > Set Path
3. Select the "..." button to browse to the location of your missing file
4. Select "OK"
